Pupils put players on the spot - myWelshpool reports

Pupils from two Welshpool schools became reporters for the day last week when two local rugby players called in to see them.

Pupils from Ysgol Maesydre Year 6 and the High School’s Year 7 took part in a ‘Rugby Shorts’ day funded by a grant from the Museums Archives and Libraries Wales (CyMAL) and the Welsh Rugby Union as part of the celebrations for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup.

The local event was organised by Powys County Council’s Library Service and saw council staff from the Communications Team give the youngsters tips on how to interview the players – a semi-retired player – Nick Larder - and a current Welshpool Ladies rugby player, Jess Andrews.

Both Nick and Jess also coach at Welshpool Rugby Club. He is the U16 Coach while Jess coaches the Junior Girls squad in Welshpool.

Councillor Graham Brown is the council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Libraries. He explained: “We were delighted to be involved in this project and are very grateful to the WRU for their generous funding for this as we wanted to use sport to capture the imagination of the pupils and engage them with storytelling. I’ve been informed that there was a lot of talent shown by the pupils at the session. Maybe we might see one or two of them following a career in sports journalism in the future?”

The pupils worked together in teams to interview and film the rugby players. Their videos are now being edited and will be submitted to the WRU’s Digital Storytelling scheme. The project was also designed to help with the transition from primary to secondary school for the Ysgol Maesydre pupils.
